Gluggle Jugs - The Fun, Practicality and History.

These jugs originated in England in the 19th century and were initially used for serving beverages like water, wine, or ale. The sound produced when pouring is due to air passing through the jug's neck and into the base, creating a unique auditory experience. The fish-shaped spout also adds a fun decorative element to the design.
Gluggle Jugs have become not only a popular collector's item but are also used as very handy and decorative pieces in homes. They come in various sizes, colours, and designs, making them a charming addition to any kitchen or dining room.
Why Does a Gluggle Jug Make a Gurgling Sound?
The gurgling sound is entirely down to physics. As liquid pours out through the narrow mouth, air must travel back into the jug through the same opening — the two flows create turbulence, producing the characteristic glug-glug-glug sound the jug is famous for.
The sound is most pronounced when the jug is at least three-quarters full. As it empties, the gurgles become less frequent. Pour slowly for a deep, deliberate gurgle; pour quickly for a rapid succession of gluggling sounds. Because each jug is handmade, no two Gluggle Jugs sound exactly the same — which is part of their enduring charm.
The History of the Gluggle Jug
The Gluggle Jug was first produced in the 1870s, originally by Royal Worcester — one of England's most prestigious ceramic manufacturers. The fish-shaped design drew on a tradition of gurgling ceramic vessels that had existed across various cultures for centuries, but the Gluggle Jug's distinctive British form quickly made it an icon in its own right.
After Royal Worcester, production passed through several hands over the decades before the original design was revived and modernised — retaining the beloved fish form and gurgling mechanism while expanding into the wide range of colours and finishes available today. Each jug is still handmade in England and kiln-fired at 1200°C, exactly as it was over 150 years ago.
The Gluggle Jug gained a new generation of fans when it appeared on Channel 4's Great British Bake Off, cementing its place as one of Britain's most recognisable and loved ceramic designs.
Gluggle Jug Sizes — Which One Is Right for You?
One of the most common questions we get at Bumble Living is which size to choose. Here's a quick guide:
| Size | Height | Capacity | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini | 9cm | 0.04L | Desk ornament, small gift, collector's piece |
| Small | 18cm | 0.35L | Juice jug, gift, display piece |
| Medium | 23cm | 0.75L | Everyday water jug, statement vase |
| Large | 28cm | 1.5L | Dining table jug, bold display piece |
The Mini is our most popular gift size — affordable, characterful and easy to post. The Large produces the most satisfying gurgle and makes a bold statement on any dining table. For everyday use, the Medium is the most versatile choice.
Gluggle Jug Colours and Collections
The range of colours and finishes is one of the Gluggle Jug's greatest strengths — there is genuinely something for every home and every taste:
- Classic colours — Cobalt Blue, Red, Yellow, Green, Orange, White, Sage, Eau de Nil, Denim, Baby Pink, Sea Green
- Lustre collection — metallic iridescent finishes in Gold, Silver and Bronze
- Copper collection — a rich, warm copper finish
- Dip Dye collection — two-tone colour gradient finishes
- Seasonal and limited editions — released throughout the year, often selling out quickly
Slight colour variations between individual jugs are a natural characteristic of the handmade process — not a flaw, but a feature that makes each jug unique.
Are Gluggle Jugs Dishwasher Safe?
Yes — most Gluggle Jugs are dishwasher safe. Because they are kiln-fired at 1200°C, the ceramic is highly durable and handles regular dishwasher use without issue. There are two exceptions to be aware of:
- The Lustre collection should always be hand-washed to preserve the metallic finish
- The Copper collection should also be hand-washed for the same reason
All standard colour jugs can go in the dishwasher with confidence. Gluggle Jugs are food safe and suitable for water, juice, wine or any cold beverage. They are not suitable for microwave or oven use.
Gluggle Jugs as Gifts
