Bumble Living’s Guide to Using Candles Safely

There’s something timeless about lighting a candle—the soft flicker, the delicate scent, the warm glow that instantly soothes the atmosphere. But while candles can elevate your space, it’s crucial to use them with care.

At Bumble Living, we’re all about creating beautiful, safe and thoughtful interiors. So here’s our ultimate guide to enjoying candles safely—without compromising on comfort or style.

1. Choose the Right Candle Holders

A candle is only as safe as the holder it sits in. Always use a sturdy, heat-resistant candle holder designed for the size and shape of your candle. Whether you prefer glass, ceramic or metal, ensure it’s stable and sits flat on the surface. Avoid placing candles on uneven or soft surfaces like cushions, table runners or carpets.

Tip: Holders with raised edges can help catch drips and prevent wax spills.

2. Be Smart When Lighting & Blowing Out

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to 5mm—this helps avoid large flames and black smoke. Use a long match or lighter to keep fingers safe, and always light candles in a draft-free area.

When it’s time to blow out your candle, do it gently. Too forceful and you risk splattering hot wax. A candle snuffer is an elegant and safe option that prevents the wick from smoking.

3. Know Your Candle Do’s and Don’ts

Do:

  • Place candles on flat, non-flammable surfaces.

  • Keep them at least 10cm apart if burning multiple.

  • Ensure they are out of reach of pets and children.

  • Extinguish all candles before leaving the room or going to bed.

  • Watch out for wax drips too ,also wehn blowing out your candles the wax can be blown onto the surface.

Don’t:

  • Leave a candle burning unattended.

  • Burn candles near open windows, even if it’s just a breeze.

  • Let a candle burn right down to the base—stop with around 1cm of wax left.

  • Touch or move the holder when it’s hot—let it cool fully first.

4. Watch for Hazards in the Room

This is where things can go wrong quickly. Keep candles well away from flammable materials like curtains, books, dried flowers or furniture polish. It takes just a second for a small flame to catch on something soft and flammable.

Don’t forget about your furry friends, either. Wagging tails and curious whiskers are no match for a lit candle. Place candles in low-traffic areas or up high where pets can’t reach them.

Safe Can Still Be Beautiful

Candle safety doesn’t mean boring interiors. In fact, a thoughtful candle setup—stylish holders, careful placement, and gentle scents—can add even more atmosphere to your home. Light wisely, and enjoy the glow with peace of mind.
